The New Visitor Economy Forum was presented in partnership with Randwick City Council.
In 2014 Australia became the most preferred overseas travel destination for Chinese visitors. During the 2014 calendar year the number of Chinese visitors to Australia grew by 17.8% contributing $5.7 billion to the Australian economy. According to the Tourism Research Australia International Visitor Survey in the 2014-15 financial year over 75,000 international visitors spent at least one visitor night in Randwick City and 12% of those visitors came from China – an increase of 40% from the 2012-13 financial year.
Randwick’s relationship with Chinese visitors goes back a long way as there were 11 Chinese sailors who landed in Botany Bay with Laperouse on the 26th January 1788. Strong ties exist today through our residents, the University of NSW and sister city, Hangzhou which is located in Zhejiang Province immediately south of Shanghai.
